Original lithographs for sale

A lithograph – also known as a stone print – is a technique that is almost 250 years old. In short, it’s a limestone with a porous surface that acts as the artist’s canvas. The artist draws or paints directly on the stone with a greasy pencil or ink – one color at a time. Then the edition is printed in the desired color. When the stone is moistened and rolled with oil paint, the paint adheres only to the oily areas. Paper is pressed against the stone and the image is transferred to the paper. The stone is then polished and is now ready for the artist to draw the next color. It’s a slow process and it’s not uncommon for there to be between 10 and 20 layers of color in each lithograph. The technique allows the artist to work with different textures and colors to create unique visual effects.
