Jacob Rantzau

Jacob Rantzau

Jacob Rantzau (born 1973 in Aalborg) is a Danish visual artist who works figuratively with high technical craftsmanship. He trained at Aalborg Art School 1996-1999, and his artistic practice revolves around man – often the individual – placed in absurd or unusual situations with references to society, culture and existential themes. His style is reminiscent of great masters such as Rembrandt and Caravaggio, especially in the use of light-dark effects. An example of his work is the exhibition “So Far Away” at Vendsyssel Kunstmuseum in 2019, where he challenged the museum space with works up to 10×10 m and installed elements such as sketch rooms and films. The themes included information flow, FOMO (the fear of missing out) and the human place in nature and culture. And most recently, Jacob Rantzau has decorated AP Pension’s new headquarters in Nordhavn, Copenhagen.

A lithograph – also called lithography – is a technique that is almost 250 years old. In short, it is a limestone that serves as the artist’s canvas. Jacob Rantzau draws the motif directly on the stone – one color at a time. Then the edition is printed with the desired color. The stone is then sanded, and is now ready for the artist to draw the next color. It is a slow process and it is not uncommon for there to be between 5 and 10 color layers in Jacob Rantzau’s lithographs.
