Pierre Soulages

Pierre Soulages

Born 1919 in Rodez, France. Died 2022.
Pierre Soulages was a French artist known as the“painter of black and light” due to his extensive use of black in his work. He developed an early fascination with art and the symbolism of ancient cultures. Working primarily in abstract art, Soulages became famous for his technique called “outrenoir” where he used black textures and light reflections to create depth and dynamism. He perceived black as a color with power and a source of light, rather than as an absent color.

His work was exhibited all over the world and he received many awards, including the title of member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts. In 2014, the Musée Soulages opened in his hometown of Rodez, dedicated to his life’s work.
