Maria Torp
Maria Torp (b. 1975) is a Danish artist living in Copenhagen. She graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 2007 and has previously studied at the London College of Printing. She works primarily with painting and drawing, but sometimes also includes sculptural elements in her work. A characteristic feature of her art is the use of cardboard as a canvas, which emphasizes her exploration of the interaction of materials. Maria Torp is deeply rooted in the hyper-realistic genre, where her precise and sensitive brushstrokes create a special vitality in her work. She focuses on themes such as equality in society, the relationship between the local and the global, and the complexity of human experience. She has exhibited widely both in Denmark and internationally. Her works can be found in several recognized collections, including Trapholt Museum in Kolding (DK), Vestjyllands Kunstmuseum in Varde (DK) and Mark Rothko Art Centre in Daugavpils (LV). In 2025, Maria Torp will make her first lithographs at Atelier Clot in Paris.

A lithograph – also called lithography – is a technique that is almost 250 years old. In short, it is a limestone that serves as the artist’s canvas. The artist draws the motif directly on the stone with a grease pencil – one color at a time. Then the edition is printed with the desired color. The stone is then sanded, and is now ready for the artist to draw the next color.
