Jaakko Antti Mattila, born in 1976 in Oulu, Finland, is a notable Finnish artist. He was educated at The Surrey Institute of Art & Design University College and graduated in 2001. Mattila has exhibited his work in both galleries and public spaces around the world, including Japan, the UK, Italy and France. Mattila’s art explores light and nature, creating a unique visual expression. His work often deals with themes of infinity, grandeur and time. He uses various techniques, including watercolor, oil paint, printmaking, and sculpture, and often participates in collaborative community art projects. The patterns that often appear in his work – such as spheres, cubes and spirals – can be seen as nature’s building blocks, moving from the very small to the very large. His work deals with elements that we know exist, but may not fully understand. He is fascinated by the unknown in the universe and life, aspects that even science admits it does not fully understand. This fascination with time and impermanence is at the heart of an exciting collaboration Jaakko Mattila has with Noma Projects.
